The most effective synthesis route for producing biodegradable polymers with desirable properties for biomedical applications is through ring-opening polymerization  ROP  of cyclic esters, such as lactide and glycolide. This method allows for the production of well-known biodegradable polymers, such as polylactic acid  PLA , polyglycolic acid  PGA , and their copolymers, poly lactic-co-glycolic acid   PLGA .ROP is a versatile and controlled polymerization technique that enables the synthesis of polymers with a wide range of molecular weights, compositions, and architectures. The resulting biodegradable polymers can be tailored to have specific degradation rates, mechanical properties, and drug release profiles, making them suitable for various biomedical applications, such as drug delivery systems, tissue engineering scaffolds, and medical implants.Additionally, ROP can be combined with other polymerization techniques, such as controlled radical polymerization  CRP  or click chemistry, to produce block copolymers or functionalized polymers with enhanced properties for specific applications.
