The bond order of the nitrogen molecule  N2  can be determined by looking at its molecular orbital diagram or using the formula:Bond order =  number of electrons in bonding orbitals - number of electrons in antibonding orbitals  / 2For N2, there are 10 valence electrons  5 from each nitrogen atom . In the molecular orbital diagram, these electrons fill the following orbitals:- 1  2 electrons - 1*  2 electrons - 2  2 electrons - 2  4 electrons So, there are 8 electrons in bonding orbitals  1, 2, and 2  and 2 electrons in antibonding orbitals  1* . Using the formula:Bond order =  8 - 2  / 2 = 6 / 2 = 3The bond order of the nitrogen molecule  N2  is 3.
