The bond order of the nitrogen molecule  N2  can be determined using its molecular orbital diagram. In the molecular orbital diagram of N2, there are a total of 10 valence electrons  5 from each nitrogen atom . The molecular orbitals are filled in the following order: 1s, *1s, 2s, *2s, 2p, *2p, 2p, and *2p. For N2, the molecular orbitals are filled as follows:- 1s: 2 electrons- *1s: 2 electrons- 2s: 2 electrons- *2s: 2 electrons- 2p: 2 electrons  one in each degenerate 2p orbital Now, to calculate the bond order, we use the formula:Bond order =  number of electrons in bonding orbitals - number of electrons in antibonding orbitals  / 2For N2:Bond order =  8 - 4  / 2 = 4 / 2 = 2So, the bond order of the nitrogen molecule  N2  based on its molecular orbital diagram is 2.
