Chlorofluorocarbons  CFCs  are a class of organic compounds containing carbon, chlorine, and fluorine atoms. The general molecular formula for CFCs is CnClxF 2n+2-x , where n represents the number of carbon atoms and x represents the number of chlorine atoms. Some common examples of CFCs include CFC-11  CCl3F , CFC-12  CCl2F2 , and CFC-113  CCl2FCClF2 .CFCs contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer through a series of chemical reactions. When CFCs are released into the atmosphere, they eventually reach the stratosphere, where they are exposed to ultraviolet  UV  radiation. This radiation causes the CFC molecules to break apart, releasing chlorine atoms. These chlorine atoms then react with ozone  O3  molecules, breaking them down into oxygen  O2  molecules and chlorine monoxide  ClO . The chlorine atoms are not destroyed in this process and can continue to break down thousands of ozone molecules, leading to significant depletion of the ozone layer.To decrease the usage and impact of CFCs on the ozone layer, several measures can be taken:1. Phasing out the production and use of CFCs: The Montreal Protocol, an international treaty signed in 1987, aimed to phase out the production and use of CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances.
