The bond order of nitrogen in a nitrogen molecule  N2  can be determined using Molecular Orbital Theory. Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons, so in a nitrogen molecule  N2 , there are a total of 10 valence electrons. The molecular orbitals for N2 are filled in the following order: 1s, *1s, 2s, *2s, 2px, 2py, 2pz, *2px, *2py, and *2pz.For N2, the 10 valence electrons fill the orbitals up to 2py:- 2 electrons in 1s- 2 electrons in *1s- 2 electrons in 2s- 2 electrons in *2s- 1 electron in 2px- 1 electron in 2pyNow, we can calculate the bond order using the formula:Bond order =  number of electrons in bonding orbitals - number of electrons in antibonding orbitals  / 2Bond order =  8 - 4  / 2 = 4 / 2 = 2So, the bond order of nitrogen in a nitrogen molecule  N2  is 2. This means that there is a double bond between the two nitrogen atoms in N2.
