This process releases chlorine and bromine atoms, which react with ozone molecules, leading to the depletion of the ozone layer. The ozone layer is essential for protecting life on Earth, as it absorbs harmful UV radiation that can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to the immune system, as well as negatively impact plant growth and marine ecosystems.To prevent further damage to the ozone layer, several measures can be taken:1. Phasing out the production and use of ozone-depleting substances: The Montreal Protocol, an international treaty signed in 1987, has been successful in phasing out the production and use of many ODS, such as CFCs and halons.
