These chlorine atoms then react with ozone molecules, leading to the destruction of ozone and the formation of chlorine monoxide  ClO  and molecular oxygen  O2 . This process is known as the ozone depletion cycle.One chlorine atom can destroy thousands of ozone molecules, leading to a significant reduction in the ozone layer's protective capabilities.
