When propene  C3H6  reacts with sulfuric acid  H2SO4  in an electrophilic addition reaction, the double bond in propene is broken, and the sulfuric acid molecule adds across the double bond. The reaction forms an intermediate alkyl hydrogen sulfate ester. In the case of propene, it forms 2-propyl hydrogen sulfate  CH3-CH SO4H -CH3  as the intermediate. When this intermediate is treated with water, the alkyl hydrogen sulfate ester is hydrolyzed, and the sulfate group is replaced by a hydroxyl group  OH . This results in the formation of 2-propanol  CH3-CH OH -CH3  as the final product.
