According to the opponent-process theory, how do cells in the visual system respond to pairs of opposing colors?

Some cells are excited by one color  e.g. red  and inhibited by its opposing color  e.g. green , while others are excited by one color  e.g. green  and inhibited by its opposing color  e.g. red .
