In cognitive-behavioural therapy, a therapist can help a client overcome fears by challenging and restructuring their negative beliefs. The therapist would identify the unhelpful thoughts that underpin the fear, and help the client to develop more positive and realistic ways of thinking. This cognitive restructuring can then be combined with exposure therapy, where the client gradually confronts the feared situation until they are desensitised to it.
