What is the difference between a one-tailed and two-tailed test?

In a one-tailed test, the researcher predicts beforehand what direction the results will go in  i.e., a directional hypothesis . In a two-tailed test, there are no directional predictions, and the researcher is simply looking for a difference between groups.
