How does operant conditioning work?

Operant conditioning is a process where behaviours are strengthened or weakened by the consequences that follow them. Behaviours that are followed by positive consequences  reinforcement  are more likely to be repeated, while those that are followed by negative consequences  punishment  are less likely to be repeated.
