Atkinson and Shiffrin's modal model of memory aimed to explain the process of memory encoding, storage and retrieval. It suggests that there are three main types of memory systems  sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory  that are responsible for different aspects of memory processing. However, the model has been criticised for oversimplifying the memory process and ignoring the role of individual differences and situational factors.
