An 'emic' approach to cross-cultural research is an insider perspective, in which culturally-specific features and nuances are examined. An 'etic' approach is an outsider perspective, in which universal aspects of human behaviour are examined. Both approaches have merit and can offer valuable insights into cultural differences and similarities.
