Limitations of theory evaluation in mental illness include the difficulty of applying laboratory-based research to real-world settings, the complexity of the causes and symptoms of mental illness, issues surrounding cultural competence and diversity, and the fact that mental illness is a highly individualised experience. Additionally, theories may not capture the full complexity of mental illness or may need to be modified as new evidence emerges.
