The diathesis-stress model is a theory that proposes that a pre-existing vulnerability  diathesis  in an individual, combined with life stressors  stress , leads to the development of mental illness. This model may explain why some individuals develop psychotic or neurotic disorders, while others in similar circumstances do not.
