The humanistic approach places a great deal of emphasis on the individual's subjective experience and personal agency, which can be empowering for clients. It is also less pathologising than other approaches, and does not view mental illness as a disease or defect. Humanistic therapies may be particularly effective for individuals with existential or spiritual concerns, or who are looking to make significant changes in their lives.
