What is the difference between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss?

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound is blocked from reaching the inner ear, while sensorineural hearing loss occurs due to damage to the hair cells in the inner ear. A combination of these types of hearing loss is possible too; they are not mutually exclusive.
