A hypothesis may be considered to be rejected when the empirical evidence does not support it, or when an alternative hypothesis  such as the null hypothesis  is supported by stronger evidence. It is important to be open-minded when testing hypotheses and to recognise that negative findings can also be useful in generating new research questions.
