exoskeleton

The arthropod exoskeleton consists of several layers of cuticle. The exoskeleton prevents water loss and gives support and protection. It also acts as a counterforce for the contraction of muscles. The exoskeleton doesnt grow as the animal grows. Therefore, it must be shed and replaced with a new one periodically through life. This is called molting .
